Pastel Painting with Anne

This is a two-part class held on two consecutive Monday evenings.

April 22 and 29 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Instructor Anne Spoon

Cost: $75.00 (for both evenings)

Maximum class size is 10 students.

This class is for adults including high school age.

This workshop is open to all levels and will focus on the basics of creating dramatic, dynamic, timeless landscapes: value, composition and simplifying shapes into a strong design. Color relationships, edges, temperature of light will be discussed, as well as the application of value studies for a strong start and atmospheric perspective for a more dynamic statement in your paintings. No matter what level you are, Anne enjoys helping you build your skills set to reach a new level in your work.

PHOTOS: It is important to bring good quality photos to work from. Please go through your photos carefully and choose ones that have large shapes and good contrast of lights and darks. This will help you better enjoy the pastel experience.

STILL LIFE: You may choose to work on a still life. Bring your stuff or use what we have at the art center.

PASTELS: Soft pastels. Sennelier or Faber-Castell Color Sets are good value. Sennelier soft pastels come in sets of 40 and 80 and 120 – ½ stick sets. These are an exceptional value. Other good sets are Rembrandt, Schmincke, Unison, Diane Townsend and Terry Ludwig, and Blue Earth Nupastels are good for initial sketches. If you already own soft pastels, bring what you’re used to working with. Also, there are a couple of small sets of soft pastel available to borrow from the BAA, but their color range may be limited.

PAPER: You may use sanded paper in this class; however, I encourage quantity over quality when exploring all new mediums. I find the more expensive the media the more apprehensive folks are about “wasting” materials. I suggest using Canson Mi-Teintes from Hobby Lobby. It has texture and accepts pastels well. Colors I like to use are Tobacco and Dark Grey, I have some I will bring. I bought the last of the Tobacco color (don’t know when it will be back in stock.)

MISCELLANEOUS:
Paper support, such as: gator board or foam core. Clips or masking tape
Pencils
Chamois or bristle brush for removing unwanted pastels
Glassine paper for transport (wax paper can also be used)
Gloves, Apron or Smock
Wet wipes
