Cowgirls in Color

with instructor Lauren Florence

Date: August 25-27, 2027

Time: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

No matter your skill level, this introductory class will help you explore acrylic paint, color mixing, and expressive portraiture all while focusing on the ever-engaging subject of the cowgirls of the American West!

Using a quick draw technique cowgirls would be proud of, you will practice capturing the face in an expressionist, not perfectionist, style. You’ll learn how to combine acrylic, charcoal and water-soluble pencils, in layers to create interesting grounds, shadows, and focal points. The class will discuss color-mixing techniques at length while creating color charts for use in class and for future reference.

You will explore how a limited color palette can force interesting
creative decisions in a portrait with delightful and harmonious results. Working on paper and on canvas during this workshop, you will create an entire posse of cowgirls!

You will leave with:
• Greater confidence in capturing a face,
• A better understanding of color mixing and color theory, and
• A better understanding of how acrylic paint can work for you.
