“Sewing a Zippered Bag”
Artist / Instructor: Joan Phillips
Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 1 – 4 pm at the BAA Art Center
Free for members. You get one FREE “Art 101” class per annual membership.
Non-member fee is $40.00
Prerequisite: Requires basic machine sewing experience.
(It’s best if each person has his/her own machine but sharing can be arranged if needed)
Learn to make a super easy fully lined zippered bag. I can show you a nearly fail-proof zipper installment technique. Believe me, if it wasn’t super easy I wouldn’t have made well over a hundred of these bags!
Fabric:
- 10” x 16” Outer Fabric (or 1/3 yard)
- 10” x 16” Lining Fabric (or 1/3 yard)
- 20” to 24” Nylon Zipper (Choose a color that will go nicely with Outer Fabric)
NOTES on FABRIC SELECTION:
- Avoid vertical prints as they will be upside down on the back of the bag.
- Black on black is very difficult to see!
- Also, I recommend pre-washing all fabric. It helps remove excess dyes and sizing. Machine-drying also shrinks the fabrics so that you don’t get a nasty surprise later when the fabrics don’t shrink at the same rate.
Tools and Supplies:
- Sewing machine with extra machine needle and extension cord
- Thread to match your Outer Fabric
- Zipper foot for sewing machine (Optional)
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- Rotary cutter, mat and ruler (For cutting your fabric)
- Seam ripper (If you have it, you won’t need it!)
About the instructor: Joan Abbott Phillips
Joan has been sewing, beading and crafting for 55 years and considers herself pretty good at itby now! She is primarily self-taught.
She has taught beading technique workshops as well as quilt-making workshops for various shops, schools, and at her former home studio in Taos, New Mexico. During the 1990s, while living in Taos, she was a quilting and weaving demonstrator at the Hacienda de los Martinez, one of Taos Historic Museums’ home museums. She was also their full-time Registrar and Archivist. Southwest Crafts magazine featured several of her “how-to” articles, including one in their premier issue, and had an article published once each by Quilt magazine and Country Quilt magazine.
She has won many award ribbons for her quilts and beadwork at county fairs, state fairs, and regional quilt competitions. The one she is most proud of is a third place award in a National Quilters Association annual show.
Joan grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, lived in Taos, New Mexico for 16 years, and has been residing in Bartlesville, Oklahoma for the past 19 years. And, yes, she still misses Taos!
